{"id":546,"date":"2011-08-17T00:13:19","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T04:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.miblaw.com\/lawschool\/?p=546"},"modified":"2011-08-17T00:13:37","modified_gmt":"2011-08-17T04:13:37","slug":"bill-of-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.miblaw.com\/lawschool\/bill-of-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill of Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>Amendment 1\r\nCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or\r\nprohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or\r\nof the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition\r\nthe Government for a redress of grievances.\r\n\r\nAmendment 2\r\nA well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the\r\nright of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.\r\n\r\nAmendment 3\r\nNo Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the\r\nconsent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by\r\nlaw.\r\n\r\nAmendment 4\r\nThe right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and\r\neffects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and\r\nno Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or\r\naffirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the\r\npersons or things to be seized.\r\n\r\nAmendment 5\r\nNo person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime,\r\nunless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising\r\nin the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time\r\nof War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense\r\nto be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any\r\ncriminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life,\r\nliberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be\r\ntaken for public use, without just compensation.\r\n\r\nAmendment 6\r\nIn all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and\r\npublic trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime\r\nshall have been committed, which district shall have been previously\r\nascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the\r\naccusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory\r\nprocess for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of\r\nCounsel for his defence.\r\n\r\nAmendment 7\r\nIn Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty\r\ndollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a\r\njury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than\r\naccording to the rules of the common law.\r\n\r\nAmendment 8\r\nExcessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel\r\nand unusual punishments inflicted.\r\n\r\nAmendment 9\r\nThe enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed\r\nto deny or disparage others retained by the people.\r\n\r\nAmendment 10\r\nThe powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor\r\nprohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to\r\nthe people.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amendment 1 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
